The Beatles Win Emmy for Best Documentary Series

Disney + ‘s “The Beatles: Get Back” won an Emmy for Best Documentary or Non-fiction Series Saturday night (3/9) in Los Angeles.

Producer-director Peter Jackson (“The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit”), who also took home the Emmy for Best Director for a documentary / non-fiction program for “The Beatles: Get Back”, shared the series award with co-producers Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono Lennon, Olivia Harrison, Clare Olssen and Jonathan Clyde.

“I’d just like to thank everyone who worked on this film,” Jackson said after receiving the trophy. “This would not have been possible without the unfailing support of Paul, Ringo, Olivia, Julian [Lennon]Yoko and Sean [Lennon], who have always been with us with their support and love. Finally, a big round of applause to the Beatles. Thank you so much for over 60 years of your positivism, your exuberance, your joy … Your music is so deep and I think it’s really ingrained in our DNA. “

The behind-the-scenes documentary on the recording of the album “Let It Be” was a labor of love by Jackson, who spent years immersed in the material filmed by director Michael Lindsay-Hogg from January 2 to January 31, 1969.

The original footage was conceived for a television special focusing on the production of a new Beatles album. But “Let It Be” ended up being the last record. After John, Paul, George and Ringo announced their separation, the record took another direction: it became a film, released in May 1970, which highlighted the internal quarrels and disputes that would lead the quartet to ending the partnership.

Intrigued by the rest of the footage that never came to light, Jackson asked to go through the files – stolen in the 1970s but recovered almost entirely by Interpol in the 1990s – and found more than 56 hours unknown to the public. With permission from the two living members of the Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, as well as the blessings of John Lennon’s widows, Yoko Ono and George Harrison, Olivia Harrison, she restored the images and audio with state of the art. technology and produced a complete reissue, which also includes the famous concert on the roof of Apple’s studio in London, the last time the Beatles played together.

The result undermines the myths established by Beatles fans. There is no bullying Paul McCartney, no intriguing Yoko Ono, no legends surrounding the band’s demise. Interestingly, George Harrison appears to be ready to act, who even abandons the recordings and threatens to leave the band, returning days later – the Beatles have been hiding this fact for years. But the highlight of “The Beatles: Get Back” is the alchemy of the greatest band of all time in their creative process. They laugh and have fun most of the time.

The series award was part of the first part of the Creative Arts Emmy, as the more technical categories of the Emmys are called.

With the Television Academy Awards totaling 119 categories, the Emmy is divided into three evenings. The first two evenings are dedicated to technical trophies, documentaries, variety specials and reality shows and take place this weekend. The main Emmys will be awarded on September 12, during a gala ceremony in Los Angeles.
