Brendan Fraser on physical transformation and the return to Hollywood

Actor Brendan Fraser will star in the film “The Whale”, which marks his return to Hollywood. The actor recently commented on this return, the physical transformations required by the role and the Oscar buzz around him and the film.

“The Whale” by Darren Aronofsky tells the story of Charlie, a lonely man suffering from severe obesity. The plot is based on a play written by Samuel D. Hunter, who wrote the script, and follows Charlie’s struggle to reconnect with his 17-year-old daughter as his health rapidly deteriorates.

The film was screened this Sunday (4) at the Venice Film Festival, as a world premiere, which resulted in 6 minutes of applause from the audience and the tears of an excited Brendan Fraser. But first he gave interviews in which he talked about the experience of the film.

“I’m just trying to stay in the present,” he told reporters when asked how to handle the speculation on awards with his comeback role. “So I guess all I’m dealing with is yourself right now. Thanks for the warm welcome. I can’t wait to see how this film makes a profound impression on everyone, as well as on me. “

To transform into Charlie, Fraser had to go through a long transformation process, wearing a costume, paired with special effects, which, according to him, meant he had to “learn to move in an absolutely new way” for the newspaper.

“I developed muscles that I didn’t know I had,” he said. “I also had a dizzy feeling at the end of the day when all the [próteses] they took off, just like you would feel stepping off the boat on the dock here in Venice, that choppy feeling. And I say this because it has given me a sense of appreciation for those whose bodies are similar, because I have learned that you have to be an incredibly strong person physically, mentally, to inhabit that physical being. “

In addition to the physical transformation, Fraser said the role was an opportunity to “step into another man’s physical being and tell the rich story of the inner life he brings.” He added: “Charlie is the most heroic man he has ever played because his superpower is to seek the good in others and bring it out. In the process, he is on his way to salvation.”

“The Whale” does not yet have a title in Portuguese, nor a preview date in Brazil. In the United States, the film opens on December 9th.
