Netflix has released the first photos of the miniseries on Chacina da Candelária, among the announcements of new Brazilian productions on the platform.

The crime known as Chacina da Candelária took place on the night of July 23, 1993, just before midnight, when a taxi and a Chevette with a covered license plate stopped in front of the Church of Candelária, in Rio de Janeiro, for its occupants to shoot at. dozens of people, mostly teenagers, who slept in the area. Eight people died, including children, and investigations found that the gunmen were militiamen.

As of yet untitled, the production will feature director Luis Lomenha (“Mourning as a Mother”), who has spent the past two years working on the production as showrunner.

The plot will follow the 36 hours preceding the tragedy from the point of view of four children. Coming from broken families, these young people find in the streets of Rio de Janeiro, and in each other’s company, a way to touch life and, who knows, fulfill their dreams and experience adventures – until their future is interrupted by a slaughter of repercussions. world cup.

“Childhood is synonymous with hope. It is today, tomorrow and after. A society that is silent in the face of the death of black children is a group of inhumans, a society that needs a new beginning,” Lomenha said in a statement. from the production platform.

To develop the project, Lomenha brought together some of the survivors with screenwriters Renata Di Carmo, João Santos, Luh Maza, Dodo Azevedo and Igor Verde.

The detail is that, instead of a dramatic narration of the tragic event – as in the movie “Fruitvale Station: The Last Stop” -, the script intends to mix dreamlike elements between drama and action scenes.

The miniseries will have four episodes and the protagonists will be played by young blacks, who have not yet worked in the audiovisual market, selected after five months of partnership with various artistic groups in the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.

They will work with established artists, such as veteran actor Antônio Pitanga and singer Péricles, who can be seen in the photos below, as well as Leandro Firmino, Maria Bopp and Stepan Nercessian.

The episodes are directed by Luis Lomenha and Marcia Faria (“Me Chama de Bruna”). The two also appear in the photos below.
