Next November 9, Time of Armageddon, directed by James Gray, will reveal its first moving pictures.
After Ad Astra, his SF film with Brad Pitt, released in 2019, James Gray is back behind the camera with Armageddon Time! This time around, The Yards-discovered director takes a 180-degree turn from sci-fi to reality-based drama. And no, despite the title, this is not a disaster movie.
The story takes us to the mid-1980s in the Queens district of New York. The latter real estate developer is under the hegemony of Fred Trump, the father of the future president of the United States, Donald Trump.
The teenager, Paul Graff, attends Kew Forest High School, whose father Trump is on the school’s board of directors and of which Donald Trump is an alumnus.
After The Lost City of Z and Ad Astra, James Gray returns with a feature film that promises to be as powerful as his first works, Little Odessa, The Yards, or The Night Belongs to Us.
An autobiographical film?
The story seems very personal for the director, who himself grew up in Queens in the 80s during the era of President Ronald Reagan.
“It’s our duty to put a part of ourselves into our work. That’s the best way to get into someone else’s head. I need to be as intimate, direct, and honest with you as possible.”– said James Gray at the microphone last May Real.
Like Paul Thomas Anderson with licorice pizza, Alfonso CuarĂ³n with Rome or Kenneth Branagh with Belfast, James Gray draws inspiration from his youth to tell us part of his country’s history.
The 53-year-old director arrived in Cannes to present Armageddon Time in Competition. The film was very well received by the press and public of the festival, but it left without an award.
The feature film is directed by young Michael Banks Repetta, who plays Paul Graf. We already had a glimpse of his talents in the recent Black Phone. The actor here answers the 5-star cast assembled by James Grey: Anthony Hopkins, Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong and Jessica Chastain.
Armageddon Time hits theaters on November 9, 2022.
