Harrison Ford says goodbye to Indiana Jones: “I will never fall again”

Disney unveiled the first trailer for “Indiana Jones 5” this Saturday (9/10) at D23 Expo, the studio’s annual convention. But he did not come out of the event.

Despite this, the preview shown at Disneyland in California served to reduce the secrecy surrounding the production. The preview begins with typical scenes from the franchise, with Indy involved in car chases, caves and fighting against the Nazis, armed with her famous whip. But it is clear that he is already retired and is summoned for one last mission.

The last time the classic character was seen on screen was 14 years ago with “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”. Ford was 64 when that movie came out, and now he’s 80.

The actor attended the event, joined by director James Mangold (“Logan”) and co-stars to confirm that the film really marks his departure from the role. “I’m happy to be back here, maybe for the last time. That’s it. I won’t fall for you guys again. But thank you very much,” he said.

With applause, he thanked the audience for the success of the franchise. “Thank you for making these films such an amazing experience for all of us,” she told the audience, sounding quite emotional. “I am very proud to say this is fantastic. [Aponta para Waller-Bridge] And this is one of the reasons ».

Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”) joins the cast, along with Boyd Holbrock (“Sandman”), Mads Mikkelsen (“Druk”), Antonio Banderas (“Uncharted”), Toby Jones (“A Boy Called Christmas”) , Thomas Kretschmann (“Avengers: Age of Ultron”) and Shaunette Renée Wilson (“The Resident”).

“The ‘Indiana Jones’ movies are about fantasy and mystery, but they are also about the heart,” continued Ford. “We have a great story to tell, plus a movie that will kick your ass.”

Waller-Bridge also shared Ford’s enthusiasm, saying, “I had the best time of my life making this movie. I feel incredibly lucky and try to keep up with this guy. [aponta para a Ford] it’s exhausting “.

The Disney event also served to reunite Ford with Ke Huy Quan, who debuted as a child actor in “Indiana Jones and the Time of Doom” 38 years ago. The Vietnamese actor was 13 at the time and is now over 50. Unfortunately, he is not part of the new film and was at D23 to attend the “Loki” panel. Ke Huy Quan has been announced as the main new addition to the cast of the second season of the Disney + series.

In development since 2015, when it was announced by then Disney CEO Bob Iger, “Indiana Jones 5” took some time to get off the ground because it had a rejected initial script. David Koepp’s idea was a direct continuation of “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”, which he also wrote. But the studio preferred a new story by Jonathan Kasdan, son of Lawrence Kasdan (the screenwriter of “Raiders of the Lost Ark”). Father and son recently worked together on “Solo: A Star Wars Story”.

But the delays were also caused by Steven Spielberg, who was unable to juggle the filming schedule. The director had repeatedly put off production plans, always prioritizing another film over his return to Indiana Jones. Until, pressed by Disney, he preferred to give up directing. Therefore, the fifth feature will be the first in the franchise without the original director.

In place of Spielberg, the direction is entrusted to James Mangold.

“It was a chilly moment for me, something I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid,” Mangold said of the work.

With the departure of Spielberg – after George Lucas left the franchise in the third film -, only the composer of the soundtrack, also signed by John Williams, and the actor of the protagonist remain the same in the inaugural film of 1981.

According to Holbrook, fans have no reason to worry about the change of director.

“The kid can’t make a bad movie,” the actor said of Mangold in an interview with Variety magazine. Holbrook was directed by the director on “Logan”.

The release of “Indiana Jones 5” is scheduled for June 29, 2023 in Brazil, one day before the US release.
