More than 200 photovoltaic panels have been installed in the City of Rock capable of generating green energy that will remain a legacy for the Olympic Park

A mini solar power plant has been set up in the city of Rock and will remain a permanent legacy for the Olympic Park, the place where Rock in Rio takes place. The action is part of a sustainability initiative by Heineken (the beer brand sponsoring the event) in search of a reduction in impacts.

The plant is made up of 206 photovoltaic panels that currently power the activations of the brewery. The good news is that, after the festival ends, the mini-plant will remain a permanent legacy.

The initiative is part of the Green Your City project, aimed at supplying using green energy and is part of the brand’s sustainability pillar.

All the technology was developed by the Brazilian company My Own Energy (MOE). The solar panels used in the project have the capacity to produce 111 kWp – peak kilowatts, in English (peak kilowatts, in Portuguese). This, according to the company, is enough to guarantee the functioning of three of the brand’s activations, during the seven days of the festival: the bar adjacent to the Mundo Stage, the Beer Stations and the entire Tyrolean structure.

To help give an idea of the capacity, Heineken says the energy produced by the mini-plant is enough to supply up to 73 social housing. With the lifespan of the plates reaching 25 years, the expectation is that the use of the structure will reduce the emission of approximately 300 tons of CO2 over the period.

Where are the solar panels?

The solar energy plates are distributed in two points within the Olympic Park: the first is fixed and is located on the roof of one of the arenas; the second is a mobile installation, located on the Velodrome floor. At the end of the festival, the movable plates will be relocated and reunited with the covering material, forming the mini-central.

Once the facility is ready, it will be used to supplement the site’s electricity demand, which will host other events. Among the plans of the brewery is the supply of renewable energy to 50% of the points of sale in 19 capitals by 2030.

According to the company, it took three weeks of work between assembly and testing so that all boards were integrated into the park’s power plant.
