Tonight on TV: An old-school disaster movie that deserves a binge-watch

Every day, AlloCiné recommends watching a movie (again) on TV. Tonight: A disaster film directed by Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin.

Tentatively starring Neill Blomkamp (Elysium, Chappie) and Chris Evans, the disaster film Greenland: The Last Stand is in distribution. The project is directed by Rick Roman Waugh, and Gerard Butler plays the main role. Thus, the two men find themselves a year after already working together on The Fall of the President.

Having already saved planet Earth in Geostorm, Gerard Butler now tries to survive a comet that threatens to cause an unprecedented cataclysm. He portrays John Garrity, a family man who embarks on a perilous journey with his ex-wife and son to reach the last haven safe from disaster.

According to Twister, where Helen Hunt hunts violent tornadoes, Greenland – the last refuge It also evokes genre classics like Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds or Roland Emmerich’s 2012, though without trying to compete with them. Indeed, the director favors the psychology of the characters and treats his subject intimately.

With a very modest budget estimated at $44 million, the film grossed over $60 million. If that score doesn’t make it profitable, it’s still notable for a film released in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic (and only on VOD in the US). With an average viewer rating of 3.1 out of 5 on AlloCiné, Greenland – the last refuge I will definitely make it to TF1 tonight.
