With 6,485,173 admissions in France this weekend, “Top Gun: Maverick” becomes Tom Cruise’s biggest hit in France, overtaking “Rain Man.”

It took Tom Cruise 33 years to break this record… With 6,485,173 entries at the national box office on Sunday night, Top Gun: Maverick becomes Tom Cruise’s biggest hit in France.
Barry Levinson’s movie, Rain Man, was the record so far. The 1989 feature film starring Cruise and Dustin Hoffman had a total of 6,474,520 in France.

Winner of 4 Oscars (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Dustin Hoffman and Best Original Screenplay), “Rain Man” follows Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise), a busy businessman who inherits an old Buick after his father dies. Robbed of 3 million francs paid to Walbrook Psychiatric Institute for his brother Raymond, an autistic scientist. The one he called the Rain Man as a child and who represents his only happy memories.

Out in theaters May 25, Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick continues its stellar run, surpassing Rain Man by 11,000 additional viewers in a single weekend.

To celebrate this record, Paramount organizes Top Gun Marathons. From September 28, most cinemas in France will have sessions consisting of Tony Scott’s Top Gun (1986) in a 4K remastered version, followed by Top Gun: Maverick.
