The streaming battle continues to escalate for audiences, major franchises, and even awards like the Emmy. But who won the most awards Monday night: HBO Max or Netflix?
In 2021, Netflix surpassed HBO and HBO Max in terms of Primetime Emmy awards, but the Tudum stream failed to repeat the feat and in 2022 it was the HBO group’s turn to reclaim the top of the biggest television award.
Together, HBO and HBO Max have amassed a total of 38 Emmy awards, doubling just 19 wins in 2021. As a result, they counted on their dominance in the limited series where HBO and HBO Max won 10 awards, largely due to the miniseries “The White Lotus”.
The miniseries was won by Mike White, who won in the writing and directing categories. Additionally, Jennifer Coolidge won for the series in the Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series category, while Murray Bartlett won the Best Actor award. Finally, “The White Lotus” again won the award for the best limited series. “Succession”, in turn, won the first prize for the best drama series.
Another HBO hit, “Euphoria” won six Oscars in her second season, including Best Actress in a Drama Series for Zendaya, her second win in the category. HBO Max also won three Emmys for the second season of “Hacks,” with star Jean Smart winning the Best Actress in a Comedy Award for the role for the second time.
Despite failing to repeat the feat of 2021, when it dominated with 44 awards thanks to “The Crown” and “The Queen’s Gambit” and surpassed HBO in Emmys, Netflix still managed to get 26 awards and was only behind HBO. / HBO Max.
This year, Netflix’s biggest winners were “Round 6”, which won six awards and made history overnight, “Stranger Things” with awards in five categories, “Arcane” with four Emmys and “Love on the Spectrum” with three. Additionally, Julia Garner also won her third Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama for “Ozark”.
