A DC Comics release this month reveals the Joker’s full name, which may finally be the final and official name given to the character.

In number 5 Flashpoint Beyond Released this month in the US, Thomas Wayne as Batman arrives at Arkham Asylum to meet the Joker from a parallel universe, who happens to be his ex-wife, Martha Wayne. Thomas and Martha were married until their young son, Bruce, was murdered. Maddened by the event, Martha became the Joker, and Thomas became Batman.

The reunion of the “couple” does not happen on the best terms, because the Joker has killed a lot of people, and Batman comes to answer him. That’s when Martha explains that the “normal” world (the one where Bruce Wayne is Batman) has changed:
This world has changed (…). The Joker was a man named Jack Oswald White. In this world, Mr. White was a failed comic with a wife and child who was involved in cleaning toilets at Wayne’s Casino. (…)

In the Batman universe, as the general public knows, that’s why the Joker is called Jack Oswald White. Note that the past chosen for the character here supersedes the past set by the comics A killing joke fromAlan Moore, who first turned the Joker into a failed comic book. White’s name may be a nod to the Joker’s skin, which is often shown as white.
As for the first name Jack, it’s a nod to Tim Burton’s Batman movie, in which the supervillain was called Jack Napier, and the comics. Knights of Gotham n°54 in which, before becoming the Joker, he was also called “Jack”. Note that Oswald is also the penguin’s real name, Oswald Cobblepot.
