Director Renny Harlin (“Die Hard 2”) will direct a remake of the horror “The Strangers” (2008), starring Madelaine Petsch (Cheryl of “Riverdale”)

Bryan Bertino’s original film (“A Monster in the Way”) starred Liv Tyler (“Ad Astra”) and Scott Speedman (“Grey’s Anatomy”) and followed a couple in crisis, who must defend themselves from a group of assassins. . disguised in their distant home. The film won a sequel in 2018, titled “The Strangers: The Night Hunt” and directed by Johannes Roberts (“Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City”), which didn’t have the same impact.

The plot of this remake will follow a girl (Petsch) and her boyfriend on a journey, as they aim for a new life elsewhere. However, the car breaks down and they are forced to spend the night in an isolated Airbnb, where they are terrorized by three masked strangers.

The cast also includes Froy Gutierrez (“Cruel Summer”) and Gabriel Basso (“Once Upon a Dream”).

The new “The Strangers” was written by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland (both from “The Fabulous Adventures of the Freak Brothers”) and, if successful, will spawn a trilogy, with all films directed by Harlin.

The project marks Harlin’s return to the horror genre, after directing such films as “Doomsday” (1987), “A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master” (1988), “The Exorcist: The Beginning” (2004) and “The mystery of the passage of death” (2013). None of these are very memorable.

“My mother instilled a love of cinema in me through the world of Hitchcock and other masters of suspense and horror. And my breakthrough in Hollywood came with the success of ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Master. of Dreams’, “Harlin said in an official statement. “It’s only fitting that I return to my favorite genre with the incredibly well-written trilogy of ‘The Strangers’. The characters and plot are all grounded in reality and offer me an endless tapestry of haunting imagery to bring these films to life.”

The new “The Strangers” has already started filming in Slovakia, but there is no date yet for the premiere.

Finland’s Renny Harlin recently wrapped filming on the action movie “The Bricklayer”, starring Aaron Eckhart (“The First Lady”) and Nina Dobrev (“The Vampire Diaries”), which has no release date yet.
