Remake modernizes classic with Unreal Engine 5, three new missions and unprecedented arrival on PlayStation 5
THE Microsoft officially announced the full remake of Halo: Combat Evolved (2001), titled Halo: Campaign Evolvedscheduled for release in 2026. Developed by Halo Studiosthe title arrives on Xbox Series X|S, PC and, for the first time in the franchise, on PS5.
The executive producer Damon Conn and the technical director Greg Hermann claim that the remake goes beyond giving a new look to the original. Second Conn: “We hope it reignites a spark, that we honor the legacy of the original game and can give back with something even greater.”
In addition to the visual and technical overhaul, the project brings three new missions that take place before the classic campaign, new weapons, modern gameplay features (such as racing) and cross-platform support with crossplay. Hermann emphasizes that “it was critical to transform the game into something modern” and that the game’s presence on PS5 will allow “veteran fans to welcome new players coming in.”

The remake and the legacy revisited
The remake proposes itself as a modern but faithful recreation of the title that, in 2001, launched the saga of Master Chief. Second Hermann“no part of this entire game was left untouched in any way.” The chosen engine is Unreal Engine 5which guarantees high-definition visuals, animations remade with motion capture and environments rebuilt from scratch.
The three pre-campaign missions expand the franchise’s history, exploring the trajectory of Master Chief next to the sergeant Johnson before the original events of the game. In addition, they will have new features, such as reworked classic weapons and the addition of racing (which will be optional).
One of the most symbolic movements of Microsoft went to take Halo to PS5. The step represents not only market expansion, but the recognition that “some players were never able to play the first Halo or any title in the franchise.” Hermann comments that the arrival at Sony aims to unite communities and reach a new audience.
Technique, accessibility and public in focus
The developers completely redesigned the environments, redid the animations and re-recorded the original sound and voices, seeking fidelity to the classic experience. The remake also prioritizes accessibility: crossplay between platforms, support for shared progress and the return of local split-screen cooperative — a traditional feature of the franchise.
Competitive multiplayer mode is not included in this release, which puts the focus solely on the campaign and the solo or cooperative experience.
In summary, Halo: Campaign Evolved appears as a turning point for the series: revisiting the past with present technology, reconnecting with old fans and opening doors for those who never had access to the universe Halo. The proposal is not just nostalgia, but reintroduction and expansion.
