The filmmaker sells watches worth up to US$1 million after investing more than US$100 million in the film
The legendary director Francis Ford Coppola faced one of the biggest setbacks of his career when he saw his science fiction epic fail at the box office, with worldwide revenue of around US$14 million, R$75 million at current prices, compared to an estimated budget of US$120 million (R$644 million). In response, he is preparing to auction off seven high-end watches from his private collection — a drastic measure aimed at recouping part of his investment.
The auction will take place in New Yorkon the sixth and seventh of December at the house Phillipsand includes pieces with an estimated value of up to US$1 million (R$5 million). For the film, Coppola largely financed with its own resources, hence the auctions.

Among the objects that will be sold is the unique watch FP Journe FFC Prototypeco-designed by Coppola and the Swiss watchmaker François-Paul Journeestimated at more than US$1 million. The piece has a central dial in the shape of an articulated human hand, and represents both the filmmaker’s passion for watchmaking and the symbolic weight of his artistic commitment.
In addition to this highlight, the collection includes models from brands such as Patek Philippe, Breguet, IWC and others from FP Journewith values ranging from US$3,000 to US$240,000. The sale of the pieces represents not only an attempt to balance accounts, but also a gesture that highlights the art of Coppola it is interconnected with its own material universe.
The timing is not good, in February 2025, Coppola was appointed Worst Director node Golden Raspberry 2025 for his film Megalopolis (2024), to which he responded in Instagram:
