Vivo has made a short film that saves one of the main characters of “City of God”, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the release of the film.
Executively produced by Fernando Meirelles, director of the original film, the 14-minute film is called “Buscapé” and meets again the photographer played by Alexandre Rodrigues. Buscapé returns to Cidade de Deus today, many years after becoming a professional photojournalist, to follow an event in the community. The sponsorship of Vivo, in partnership with Motorola, takes the form of the “camera” chosen for the mission: a mobile phone.
But in addition to serving as advertising and honoring – even visually – the 2002 work, the short film proposes an ethical discussion, placing the photographer in front of a dilemma: to report only a crime (trafficking in wild animals) or to respect the agenda of neighborhood exaltation. The outcome is far from ideal, but it can fuel discussions, especially given the situation in which Rio de Janeiro finds itself, after decades of “closed eyes” that have allowed an unprecedented explosion of crime in any other capital of the Village.
“City of God” earned 4 Oscar nominations in 2004, including Best Director, Adapted Screenplay, Editing and Cinematography. The film won 74 awards, including the BAFTA Awards (the British Academy Awards) for Best Editing (now director Daniel Rezende).
“Buscapé” has a script by Paulo Lins (author of the book that inspired the original film) and Thais Fujinaga (“Onisciente”), directed by Fred Luz (“12 Hours”) and also saves the character Barbantinho, lived by Edson Oliveira .
