Tonight on TV: An underrated comedy that will make you think

Every day, AlloCiné recommends watching a movie (again) on TV. Tonight: Roshdi Zemi’s first production.

The son of Moroccan immigrants, Roshdi Zemi paves the way for actors of Arab origin in France, becoming known for very diverse roles and films: social cinema, comedies for the general public or psychological films. In 2006, he won the best actor award at Cannes (tied with his co-stars) for Indigènes, a war film about North African soldiers mobilized in 1943.

Also in 2006, producer Philippe Godeau asked him to write and act in a film about a mixed couple – he, a Jew, she, a Muslim. In this way, Roshi Zemi responds to bad faith writing, which he first sees as pure comedy before imbuing it with more emotion and seriousness.

If he uses his own experience and his relationship with Islam, he still surrounds himself with Pascal Elbe to avoid clichés about Jewish characters, as well as Agnes de Sassi for the design of female characters.

Having completely mastered his subject, Roshi Zemi agrees to go behind the camera for the first time in his career. That’s why he signs a charming comedy, awarded with a gold star for the first film, whose message about tolerance remains relevant.

bad faith Roshdi Zem with Cecil de France, Roshdi Zem, Pascal Elbe…
