The announcement that Sony plans to release a new movie in the “Karate Kid” franchise took the producers of “Cobra Kai” by surprise. While Sony says the new feature will continue the story of the original franchise, currently being explored on the Netflix series, Jon Hurwitz, one of the creators and producers of “Cobra Kai,” has revealed that he knows nothing about the project.
In a post posted on Twitter, Hurwitz said the new “Karate Kid” shouldn’t focus on the characters from “Cobra Kai”, but he doesn’t rule out directing a movie from the series in the future.
“You [outros produtores] and I would love to do the “Karate Kid” and “Cobra Kai” movies and hope to do it someday. But this film is not ours nor does it focus on the cast of “Cobra Kai”. I don’t know much about the production, but I wish them the best, ”the producer wrote.
Unlike the 2010 reboot, Sony announced the new film as “the return of the original ‘Karate Kid’ franchise” and set a release date for June 7, 2024.
Internet speculation suggested that the film could promote the meeting between Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Julie Pierce (Hilary Swank), finally joining the stars of “Karate Kid: The Moment of Truth” (1984) and “Karate Kid 4 : The New Adventure “(1994).
But Hurwitz’s statement diminished this potential.
While no further details about the production emerge, “Cobra Kai” continues to tell the official story of “Karate Kid” on Netflix. The fifth season was released on September 9 and currently leads the chart of the most viewed series on Netflix.
