Woody Allen has announced that he will retire from the cinema following the release of his next film, entitled “Wasp 22”.
The 86-year-old director is expected to start production on his latest feature film in the coming weeks in Paris and has told a Spanish newspaper that he plans to make the last.
“My idea, in principle, is not to make more films and focus on writing,” he said in an interview with La Vanguardia, adding that he is working on a novel.
This isn’t the first time Allen has revealed plans to move away from the film industry. In a conversation with Alec Baldwin that aired live on Instagram in June, Allen said he intended to direct “at least one more movie,” stating that “the thrill is gone” due to the decline of the cinematic experience.
In his long career, Allen received a record 16 Academy Award nominations for Best Screenplay. He has won four Oscars, including one for Best Director for “Nortic Fiancé, Nervous Bride” (1977).
In recent years, his career has been marked by rescuing allegations made by his former partner Mia Farrow of molesting her adopted daughter Dylan. Allen has always denied the allegations, was investigated in the 1990s and continued to work and earn awards. But after the #MeToo movement, Dylan and his brother Ronan Farrow embarked on a successful cancellation campaign, which saw Allen lose distribution contracts for his films and even editorials, with his memoir having to change. publisher for pressure against publication.
His most recent films have had little or no screening in North America, and several American actors he has worked with in the past have disowned the director.
“Wasp 22” will have an all-French cast.
It will be the director’s second film shot in Paris. He won the Oscar for best screenplay with the first, “Midnight in Paris”, which 10 years ago featured Marion Cotillard and Léa Seydoux, but left the main roles to American artists.
