Logan, which airs tonight on C8, marks Wolverine’s final appearance on the big screen. When will we see the clawed mutant in the movies again?
In March 2017, Hugh Jackman made his big screen debut as Wolverine in Logan.
The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing $619 million worldwide. After this last stand of the swashbuckling mutant, there was much speculation in Hollywood: Who has been giving sideburns since Hugh Jackman?
Tom Hardy, Kit Harington, Pablo Schreiber and Chris Evans were all mentioned, fueling the craziest rumors about the superhero’s return.
However, the most compelling lead at the moment belongs to Taron Egerton. The 32-year-old actor, best known for playing the lead role of Eggsy in the first two Kingsmans, recently spoke with The New York Times to promote his new Apple TV+ series, Black Bird.
A new Wolverine more faithful to the comics?
In an interview published last July, the Brit called for a meeting with Marvel Studios executives, including president Kevin Feige. The actor wants to follow in Hugh Jackman’s footsteps as the next Wolverine, despite some fears.
“I’d be excited, but I’d also be scared because Hugh is so associated with the role that I wonder if it might be too difficult for anyone to do it. But hopefully, if it happens, the public will give me a chance.”
Moreover, this is not the first time that the young man speaks publicly about the famous mutant. In 2019, he told British GQ that he knew some Marvel fans hoped he would play the character.
“It’s really flattering that someone thinks I’d be good for the role. I love Marvel, but it’s just a fan. There’s no basis for those rumors.“, he explained then.
After seeing him with all his muscles in the Blackbird series, fans of the super-mutant saw that the actor had the build for the role of Wolverine. Also, being shorter and stockier than Hugh Jackman (1m75 vs 1m88), he would be more faithful to the comic book character.
Marvel Studios is also looking to integrate the X-Men into the MCU, as it recently did with the She-Hulk series.
Do you have the eye of the tiger?
During episode 2, we can see a rallying cry for Wolverine. If you stop at minute 6 and look closely at the workplace Jennifer is visiting, you will be able to read the following sentence:
“Man fights bar fight with metal claws”, which can be translated as “Man fights in bar with metal claws”. A description that perfectly fits our X-Men with a nervous temperament.
In addition, the Miss Marvel series also mentioned mutations, thus heralding the future arrival of the X-Men. In turn, Doctor Strange 2 directly invited Professor Charles Xavier into the film’s memorable sequence.
However, because of that, it will still take a long time before you see the clawed mutant in the cinema again. Do you think Taron Egerton is a good choice? We’ll let you weigh in on that!
