Nine rings for men, seven rings for dwarves, three rings for elves, and one ring for a dark lord.
While we hear a lot about them in Tolkien’s works and Peter Jackson’s trilogy, we rarely see rings of power on screen other than the unique one carried by Frodo to Mordor.
However, provided you keep your eyes open and know exactly where to look, you can spot some of them in the movies, especially the elves.
While we’re still waiting for their concept in The Rings of Power series (available on Amazon Prime Video from September 2), let’s take a look at the final moments of the return of the king and a sequence in which we get a glimpse of Naria’s so-called
As Romain Bays (aka Menrau) reminds us in the above video and podcast, Narya, the ring of fire, or the ruby, is indeed brought by Gandalf to the Gray Haven when the wizard travels to Valinor with Frodo and Bilbo at the end. Lord of the Rings.
One of the Three Rings of the Elves (along with Nenia and Willia), Naria was forged by the master smith Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards in the Amazon series) before being given to Kirdan and then to Gandalf.
Unlike the Nine Rings of Men and the Seven Rings of the Dwarves, the Elves were created without Sauron’s help, and thus he could not corrupt them. On the other hand, it was using knowledge acquired from the Dark Lord that Celebrimbor forged them. Therefore, they are subject to the power of the unique in spite of everything.
No doubt this is why Gandalf, who wields Naria throughout the trilogy, only wields it at the end when one is destroyed (and Sauron with it). However, he mentions Naria earlier in the saga when he comes face to face with the Balrog in the Fellowship of the Ring and introduces himself as “Servant of the Secret Fire, Guardian of the Flame of Anoris”.
