“The rings of power”: Elrond’s choice and the identity of the unknown

The fifth episode of the series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” arrived at dawn this Friday (23), continuing the events of episode 4.

After Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) gained an important ally in the fight against Sauron in the previous episode, it was time for another elf to make a breakthrough in his own quest: Elrond (Robert Aramayo). The elf, who went to Khazad-dum on a mission, soon found himself torn between friendship with Durin IV (Owain Arthur) and his duty.

Already in Númenor, Galadriel had to make another conquest before leaving for Middle-earth. However, it was Isildur (Maxim Baldry) who gained more prominence in the episode, as well as those who are against the alliance with the elves. But in the end it was the scene where Galadriel was teaching Númenor’s soldiers to fight that he stole the show.

On the side of the Southern Lands, the elf Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova) finds himself in a difficult situation, while a part of the humans sheltered in the tower decide to join the forces of evil. But the artifact the orcs seek remains in the possession of the boy Theo (Tyroe Muhafidin), and the remaining humans seem to devise a plan to escape with their lives.

But at the end of the day, The Rings of Power’s biggest question so far is perhaps the identity of the Stranger (Daniel Weyman), and the episode offers some hints while wondering if he’s good or bad.

Not knowing who he is, the Stranger appears confused as to which side he is on: light or dark. Those who theorize it is Sauron may have gained ground, but no definitive answer has been given. The scene in which he saves, but then ends up scaring, the young Nori (Markella Kavenagh), highlights the ambiguity of this character.

Furthermore, mysterious figures appear to be looking for the Stranger, who is migrating through Middle-earth along with the hairy feet. But what will his fate be, and who is he really?

The pace of “The Rings of Power” is even slower and those who, like me, are also watching HBO’s “House of the Dragon” may take some getting used to. While a series is fast-paced and time-hopping, “The Rings of Power” is meant to be enjoyed scene by scene, with a universe that expands with each episode and responses that are slow to offer viewers.

The sixth episode of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” arrives on Prime Video next Friday (30) at 1am. The first five episodes of the series are available on the platform.
