Representation is a subject of American fiction. In France, cinema lags behind, but television is slowly making inroads, especially through daily newspapers. For example, Eliot in Ici Tout Commence, a character through whom, among other things, approaches non-binary.
France.tv Slash is also active around these questions thanks to their numerous programs aimed at a young audience, but not only. Their new series, Soft Chair, stands out for its sensitivity and precision on an off-screen topic: intersex.
For her writing, creator and author Yael Langman was inspired by an encounter that shattered her adolescence. At the age of 17, he learns that one of his friends was born in an intersex body: neither a girl nor a boy. The screenwriter conveys this memory to tell Sasha’s story in his own words.
The 10-episode series follows teenagers’ search for identity and meaning. Through a portrait of Sasha and a wonderful gallery of secondary characters, The Soft Chair opens the doors to the general public on a subject that is misunderstood and often viewed through a medical prism.

Angel Metzger in “Tender Flesh”.
Yael Langman – who co-directs the series with Jeremy Meingui – is interested in the human journey through intersexuality without ever taking the voyeuristic, unfortunate and objectifying gaze. Compassion prevails here. If everything works, it is partly thanks to this precise writing, but also a beautiful distribution.
In the lead role, Angel Metzger instantly captures the attention of the audience. Around him, Saul Benchetrit, Marin Judas, Paola Locatelli, Lena Garrel, Régis N’Kissi Moggzi and Andréa Furet form an authentic group that is very easy to get attached to. Some will recognize Daphne Burke as the – amazing – mother and Grégoire Collin as the father.
great success tender meat is to remove taboos with humanity and delicacy. The series manages to reach as many people as possible and create a sense of identification that goes beyond the main character’s journey.
Soft Chair is available in full on France.tv Slash from 6pm and will be broadcast on France 5 on 23 September at 9pm.
