Netflix has given up on producing the series based on “Grendel”, a cult comic from the Dark Horse Comics publisher.
The project was part of a three-year contract with the publisher following the successful publication of the adaptation of “The Umbrella Academy”.
The decision was made while production was underway. “Grendel” went on to record most of its initial eight episodes under the direction of Andrew Dabb, who developed the recently canceled “Resident Evil: The Series”. But it wasn’t completed. With the decision, the producers will take the project to other interested parties.
“Grendel” would play Abubakr Ali (“Katy Keene”), the first Muslim Arab actor to play a lead in a comic book series.
The cast also included Jaime Ray Newman (“Midnight, Texas”) as the main character’s crush, Jocasta Rose and Julian Black Antelope (“Tribal”) as antagonist Argent, a Native American werewolf who continues to hunt. to Grendel to stop their brutal crimes. In addition to them, the girl Emma Ho (“Code 8: Renegades”) plays an important role in the outcome of the plot, as the orphan Stacy Palumbo.
Created by Matt Wagner in 1982, the title collects several stories of different characters who live Grendel, but all linked in one way or another to Hunter Rose, famous writer, who after the death of the woman turns out to be a skilled killer he loved. . Initially acting as a vigilante, he quickly changes sides and becomes his town’s crime boss. But his story is short. More people take their places and the plot continues into a dystopian future, where Grendel’s story merges with horror tales about the devil.
Besides “The Umbrella Academy”, Netflix has only one other adaptation of Dark Horse in its catalog: an animated series based on “Usagi Yojimbo”, Stan Sakai’s samurai rabbit.
