Mehdi Faveris-Essad, his real name, who died in an accident in September 2011, is an artist who left his mark on an entire generation. It is to him that the feature film at the end of the film is dedicated.
“The idea came up very early to pay tribute to our friend DJ Mehdi by putting his themes into music. We already wanted to avoid the rap setting cliché because the film is set in a city. To emphasize the film’s Greek tragedy, we wanted to create music that didn’t deny its era, but wasn’t completely overshadowed. Then we found extracts from Princes de la ville or big hits that DJ Mehdi had with 113 very precise sounds to keep the hip-hop feel and develop them in a somewhat anachronistic way.Surkin reveals.
Romain Gavras also knew Mehdi well, having worked with him. The director created the clip for “Signatune” featuring actor Olivier Barthelemy, a piece that combines electro and rap, which you can discover below. “His work is something strong, melancholic,” the director explains.
During his career, the DJ will work closely with many French rappers and artists: he will be part of Ideal J with Kerry James, in the Mafia K’1 Fry collective, in 113, as mentioned above, Mc Solaar or Booba.
