What is it about?
To support her friends who have gone off to fight in Vietnam, Chick Donohue decides to go to the front and bring the soldiers a souvenir from home: a can of their favorite beer. But soon, what begins as a well-intentioned trip becomes the adventure of a lifetime for Chick, who is confronted with the reality of this controversial war. His reunion with childhood friends plunges him into the complexities and responsibilities of adult life. Who is crazy enough to cross an ocean and find himself in the middle of a war to share beer with his friends? Chick Donohue, a young American who went to Vietnam in 1967 and found himself in the middle of an armed conflict.
If it all started as a joke after a drunken evening, Donohue embarks on a dangerous adventure from which he will return in a different, but changed face. The actor Zac Efron was chosen for the main role: “I got to know him and his extraordinary journey in a strange way. This selfless act for his friends totally speaks to me.“
If The Greatest Beer Run Ever is directed by Peter Farrell, a regular comedy to which we owe especially Dumb and Dumber, Mary at any Cost or even Too Much Love, and a synopsis read in the readiness of a smile, it is not about comedy. far from there. The feature film immerses us in the armed conflict and wants to show us the sacrifices made by the youth in the name of politics.
To make it as authentic as possible, part of the film was shot in Thailand. A difficult shoot for the whole team, as the director tells us: “In fact, the real challenge was shooting in the jungle with temperatures over 40 degrees, 100% humidity and mud everywhere... which his main actor confirms:
“On the other hand, I didn’t know what we would have to face when we went to shoot in Thailand. As Peter explained, it was quite a challenge. It’s like we’re actually living in a movie DiCaprio – Revenant – or as if we were in the middle of the Vietnam war again.”
On the distribution side, The Greatest Beer Run Ever can count Bill Murray, Russell Crowe, Kyle Allen or Archie Reno among its ranks. The wonderful cast can be seen on Apple TV+.
