Generally, it’s a manga that’s been adapted into a movie, for better… but generally for worse. But for once, it’s a movie adapted into a manga available from Ki-oon publications in two volumes.
Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, The Sacrificed Lovers tells the story of a family in Japan in the 1940s, when a trip to Manchuria, occupied by the Imperial Army, prompts a wealthy industrialist to try his best to escape the country and join the American continent.
A historical story with both a realistic and a tragic tone, the feature film appeared in the selection of the Venice Film Festival in 2020 and its director won the Mostra Left Silver Lion for Best Director. The Sacrificed Lovers won the Best Film and Best Actress awards at the equally prestigious Asian Film Awards.
Divided into two volumes of approximately 150 pages each, the manga adaptation of Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s film was commissioned by author/illustrator Masasumi Kakizaki, best known for his Western series Green Blood (5 volumes, also available on Ki-oon).
