Every day, AlloCiné recommends watching a movie (again) on TV. Tonight: Franck Gastambide and Malik Bentalha heat up the Marseille pitch.
A fan of the Taxi saga, a real hit in France between 1998 and 2007, Franck Gastambide dreams of rebooting it. Encouraged by his supporter Malik Bentalha, he contacted Luc Besson, who hired him to film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Impressed by the success of Kaira and Pattaya, the director took his idea to producer EuropaCorp, who gave it the green light.
Franck Gastambide thus responds to the writing of Taxi 5, in collaboration with Luc Besson and Stéphane Kazangiani (his co-screenwriter in Pattaya), and also lends his qualities to the main character, Sylvain Maraud, an efficient Parisian policeman and exceptional pilot who is transferred to the municipal police brigade in Marseille after being punished by the prefect for sleeping with his wife.
Alongside Malik Bentalha, he replaces Sammy Nasser and Frederic Diefenthal, who played the characters in the first films. On the other hand, the distribution always includes Bernard Farsi in the iconic role of Commissioner Guibert, who became the mayor of Marseille. Italian Salvatore Esposito, the star of the TV series Gomorrah, plays the big bad.
Franck Gastambide manages to appropriate the codes of the saga in the insane fifth opus, with nonsensical sequences and a series of brutal chases that seduced 3.6 million viewers when it was released in cinemas in 2018.
