Carmen “Carmi” Berzato, a young chef from the world of gastronomy, returns to Chicago to run the family establishment after her brother’s suicide. Away from her world, Carmi must deal with the enormous responsibilities of a small business, unruly staff and strained family relationships, all while dealing with the aftermath of a tragedy.
The Bear, a series created by Christopher Storer with Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ayo Edebir, Lionel Boyce. Watched episodes: 3 of 8
In the role of Carmen “Carm” Berzato – short for “Ber”, hence the name The Bear – fans of the series will find an endearing lip of shamelessness played by Jeremy Allen White. Blue-eyed and droopy-lidded, he dazzles in this role as a young chef destined for stardom but who returns home to run the family sandwich shop his brother bequeathed to him.
There is also Ebon Moss-Bachrach (seen in Girls and The Punisher). He plays the manager of Richie’s restaurant The Original Beef of Chicagoland and the deceased brother of Michael’s best friend, Carmi.
Bear is also an opportunity to discover other talent, including Ayo Edebiri, who plays Sydney Adamu, a talented but inexperienced young chef who joins Beef as the new sous chef under Carmi.
Explosive and gourmet series, the bear is one of those nuggets that will amaze you with its multiplicity of flavors, but always finding the right balance. Billed as a dramatic comedy, it’s funny at many points with lines that explode like punch lines. But the drama is never far away, beyond the initial premise of Karma’s brother’s death.
Between “Top Chef” for sandwiches – for which it is good to die – and “Cauchemar en cuisine” because of the atmosphere that reigns in this brigade that acts as a dysfunctional family, “Bear” is a nervous series that beats the rhythm. The pace of the knives that cut tomatoes and onions. He also pops up occasionally to better boil down his characters’ emotions that are simmering inside. And often they are let out of the pressure cooker with loud screams.

You also have to learn to tame this bear from Karma, who has no time to mourn his brother, who has exhausting dreams and sleepwalking attacks where he wakes up with four stoves. The young man was at the head of the elite brigade in one of the most elegant restaurants in New York.
Today, he has to deal with a team that does not want to give up its habits, a bad organization. You also have to deal with egos. The kitchen at The Original Beef is a bit of a loud competition. The camera moves between the characters to paint a portrait of souls in crisis: mourning, loss of bearing, crisis of masculine identity, competition… all pass under the sharp pen of series creator Christopher Storer.
In this chaotic world, only Sydney stands out as the most calm and orderly. Despite his young age and inexperience, his passion for the profession and sincere ambition allow him to stay grounded. But all is not clear in this series, which presents itself as a real mess. Everything is subject to decay. Emotions are always on edge. The audience is then suspended in this fascinating ballet, the delicate balance of which threatens to shake at any moment.
