In Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore, Mads Mikkelsen gives life to the villain Grindelwald – Johnny Depp’s role in the first two films of the saga
In Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets (2022)Mads Mikkelsen gives life to the villain Gellert Grindelwald. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporterthe actor revealed that replacing Johnny Depp in the franchise was “pretty chaotic.”
Grindelwald was originally played by Johnny Depp in the first two films of the saga – but the actor was released from the franchise after starring in a long controversy alongside his ex-wife Amber Heard.
Therefore, Mikkelsen had a big challenge during filming — as I didn’t want to copy what Johnny Depp did on paper, but also didn’t want to be completely different from the original character.
“It was quite chaotic. I didn’t want to copy anything he (Depp) does—that would be creative suicide. Even if it was done perfectly, you want to make it yours. But you still have to build some kind of bridge between what came before.”
