Please note, the following is the plot of Episode 8 of Dragon Series, which is available on OCS on demand. If you haven’t seen it yet and don’t want to know anything about its content, I suggest you stop reading this article now.
Episode 8 of House of the Dragon opens in the sinister bowels of High Tide Castle on Lamarck Island. As Lord Corley’s Velarion suffers from a strange illness, negotiations are underway to find his successor. As we suspect, a new war of thrones is underway, except it’s not about capturing the prestigious Iron Throne, but the Driftwood (sic) Throne, literally a seat built from rotting planks.
Once on the throne, however, things take a crucial political turn, while the case coincides with Rhaenyra and Daemon’s grand return to Port-reale, years after their controversial incestuous marriage. For Rhaenyra, it quickly became a matter of not choosing the Hightower clan – Queen Alycent and her father Otto, again the Hand of the King – to succeed Corliss.
The problem is that Rhaenyra is responsible for the alleged death of her previous husband, Laenor…Vellarion. Of course, we, the viewers, know that the latter is still alive, but it is hard to imagine that the heir to the Iron Throne admitted to his great cousin Rhaenys Targaryen (wife of Corlys) that their son is not dead, but he just shaved his head to get out of the region to escape and fully experience his homosexuality.
But what weight does the loss of a son weigh in the scales of hatred when on the other side is the humiliation of being abdicated in favor of Visser I, a decision that earned Rhaenys the nickname “The Queen Who Made”. no reign”. A deal has been made between the two Targaryens (namely, in exchange for their children marrying to create a common royal line), but Rhaenyra still lacks a key support: her father, King Viserys I.
Due to bad luck, the latter is chained for the rest of his life, both due to illness and due to the means prepared for him by order of the main masters of the castle. His face half-hidden with a blindfold, Viserys somehow recognizes his daughter and brother (if not his son-in-law now?) and their two new children, two beautiful blond heads, including little Viserys, who is already proud. His grandfather/uncle.
Visser I, aka The King in the Iron Mask.
It is difficult to know what is more difficult for Rhaenyra: to find her father in such a state, or to realize that he will not be of any help to her, and therefore it will be impossible for her to avoid the Hightowers. Impact on the Throne of Drifwood (re) Death of Korlis Velarion.
But just when all hope seems lost, Viserys suddenly shows up to attend the meeting himself, leading to a delicious moment when Otto Hightower, sitting comfortably on the Iron Throne, realizes that he is not the true ruler of the realm. Well, outside of Viserys’s crash entrance, the effect is softened somewhat by him walking awkwardly, then climbing the steps to finally sit (or rather collapse) on his throne.
The meeting can resume as usual. Vemond Velarion opposes the nomination of Lucer Velarion, Rhaenyra’s youngest son (officially recognized as the son of Laenor Velarion, but his real father is Harvin Forth). The princess steps up to the plate and the exchange quickly devolves into settling scores when Alicent decides to intervene in her turn.
But Vemond makes the tragic mistake of letting his anger take precedence over reason. Calling Luceris a bastard, the latter goes even further and calls Rhaenyra.p*t*“. It’s too much for Visser to ask to provide the renegade’s tongue, which the demon willingly gives himself at that moment. “Don’t take my wife’s name out of your mouth!” And it was like a remake of Will Smith’s Oscar Punch in the Face. In short…

We’ll spare you the details, but Lucerys is finally appointed heir to the Driftwood Throne by Viserys (sorry about that name, but we’re not used to it…). But the episode doesn’t end there as the king decides to take advantage of the opportunity to have a meal in the presence of his entire combined family. Well, it must be said that he’s pretty much the only one who hasn’t yet learned that none of his family members can kill each other…
and still! Everything seems to be going as usual. And finally, it’s relative again, as the king sees fit to remove his mask to reveal his completely empty right eye socket and his cheek completely rotted away by the disease. And a good appetite, of course! Still, the series of toasts allows Rhaenyra to make a sympathetic gesture to Queen Alicenta… who returns the courtesy.
Satisfied but exhausted, Viserys returns to his room and continues without him until the end of dinner. As soon as the king left, the suckling pig business began! While the Targaryen children (who clearly can’t screw each other up) send pawns upon pawns, Emond, who has remained silent until now, makes a toast, paying particular respect to the “strength” of his nephew Lucerius (known as Lucy).
Of course, the tribute is ironic, and the dinner ends up starting a fight, which is interrupted by a demon who clearly wouldn’t hesitate to cut off his own nephew to adopt (especially since he’s the future heir to the throne of Driftwood. Damn tree!). Laughter, tears, good wine and well-prepared plates: in short, family meals in the Targaryens are finally like ours!
The epilogue of this episode sees Viserys about to take his last breath. His wife Alicent goes to his bedside; Because of his condition, it is obviously impossible to tell whether the latter knows he is addressing the queen or is confusing his daughter. Nevertheless, in his last words, the latter entrusts him with the responsibility of entrusting the future of the kingdom to Aegon.
We can imagine that Alicent is thinking of his son, Aegon II, but is it more Aegon III, the son of Rhaenyra and the demon Saint Targaryen? The answer, we viewers can guess: this line, almost a vision of the future, involves a distant descendant of the king, Aegon Targaryen, better known as… Jon Snow!
