Avengers Endgame: Moving Reference Hidden in Tony Stark’s Last Line

While Avengers: Endgame aired Sunday night on TF1, I took a look at the last line spoken by Iron Man in the movie. A sentence loaded with meaning, memories and nostalgia.

We’re at the end of The Avengers, the final chapter of the Infinity Saga, which airs Sunday night on TF1. After an epic battle with Thanos and his fearsome army, the Marvel heroes think all hope is lost when the Titan reclaims the Infinity Gauntlets, set with his 6 Stones.

“Now I’m Inevitable”, the super-villain exclaims, still unaware that the gems were secretly stolen from him by Tony Stark in a last-ditch attack. A confusion that Thanos realizes when he tries in vain to activate the gauntlet’s powers.

Now in possession of the Infinity Stones, Stark then sacrifices his own life to save Thanos’ life, with a final snap of his finger and a poignant response that will be remembered:

I am an iron man.

As all Marvel fans will notice, this little phrase was not chosen by accident. Indeed, it immediately echoes the conclusion of the first Iron Man, which was directed by Jon Favreau in 2008 and already by Robert Downey Jr.

The MCU’s first feature film, the film ended with a press conference held by Tony Stark, who then revealed his dual identity to the cameras around the world:

I am Iron Man.

This announcement, which was immediately followed by Tony Stark and Nick Fury meeting in the film’s post-credits scene, literally marked the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the first stages of the Avengers epic.

After 10 years, the circle is complete: in 2008, reusing the copy that allowed him to enter the adventure, Tony Stark bows and painfully says goodbye to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
