“House of the Dragon” co-creator and showrunner Ryan Condal submitted a proposal for a different spin-off for HBO, before the prequel that became the currently airing series became a reality.
Despite all the success of the “House of the Dragon” series, which has already proven itself to be more than just a “Game of Thrones” prequel and expanded this universe created by George RR Martin, this was not HBO’s first attempt at capitalize on this in addition to their most successful series.
Ryan Condal was chosen by George RR Martin for the script and later became co-creator and showrunner. But this wasn’t the only “Game of Thrones” prequel that Condal, an avowed fan of George RR Martin, wanted to develop. He pitched an idea to HBO for another series, based on one of Martin’s favorite stories.
He pitched HBO an idea for a series that would adapt the book “The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”, also known as “The Tales of Dunk and Egg”. The story takes place 90 years before the events of “Game of Thrones”, while “House of the Dragon” takes place nearly 200 years before.
“House of the Dragon” is based on the book “Fire and Blood”, which focuses on the history of House Targaryen. The series focuses on a specific period in this story, when the civil war that divided the family and the whole of Westeros, known as the Dance of the Dragons, caused by the dispute over the succession to the Iron Throne between Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and her half-younger brother, Prince Aegon Targaryen.
The story of “The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” follows the adventures of a humble cover knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his squire, a high-ranking cheater, Prince Aegon “Egg” Targaryen (not to be confused with anyone of the Aegons of “The House of the Dragon”), who grows up to become king Aegon V, also known as “Aegon the improbable”. Condal explained his love for the prelude during an interview with The casing.
“Frankly, I still love the idea of this story as a counterpoint to the original ‘Game of Thrones’ and what we’re doing, because it’s more of a ‘lone wolf and pup.’ It’s more “The Mandalorian” than the original “Star Wars” where there are just two guys running around in this very complex, dangerous and highly political world that isn’t necessarily political, which I’ve always found interesting as an adventure story. to tell in the West. “
In 2021 the Variety announced that a possible adaptation of “Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” was in the early stages of development at HBO and George RR Martin himself confirmed that Steve Conrad would be the showrunner if production was ordered as a series.
Martin also revealed that Conrad was “determined to make a faithful adaptation of the stories”, much to the author’s relief, who considers this a very “valuable” story. There is still no confirmation that the Dunk and Egg series will come to fruition, but if it does, the creator and showrunner of “House of the Dragon” will give us a hand.
In addition to “House of the Dragon” and this potential series based on “The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”, there are many other “Game of Thrones” universe productions in development at HBO. Find out more about them here!
