Scorsese is adapting one of his best films into a TV series with DiCaprio

In 2002, Martin Scorsese brought Herbert Asbury’s novel Gangs of New York to the screen, directing the man who would become one of his favorite actors, Leonardo DiCaprio.

Then the director plunges us into the heart of the Five Points district in 1846, a poor suburb of New York, which is the scene of a gang war between Irish immigrants on one side, Dead Rabbits led by Father Wallon (Liam Neeson). On the other hand, the Native Americans, led by the bloodthirsty Bill the Butcher (Daniel Day-Lewis).

Dark, violent, but no less charming, Gangs of New York was nominated for an Oscar 10 times (but without winning anything).

We are studying today Deadline that the series project is being developed on the Miramax side, at DiCaprio’s suggestion, in order to later sell it to the streaming platform. Nevertheless, according to American media, the first two episodes will be directed by Scorsese.

This new adaptation should include new characters and thus be different from the characters of the 2003 film released here. It will be necessary to wait for the broadcaster to acquire the rights for the project to go into production.

This series “Gangs of New York” in any case marks the last collaboration between Scorsese and DiCaprio, who are currently working on the series “The Devil in White City”, which focuses on the first American serial killer.
