The series “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” received its final episode of the first season earlier this Friday (14), which revealed some great mysteries of the plot, while others remained open.
Having spent most of the previous two episodes in the Southern Lands, Episode 8 focuses more on three locations: the kingdom of the elves, Númenor, and the place where hairy feet meet.
Galadriel and Halbrand arrive in the kingdom of the elves to heal the wounds of the king of the Southlands. There are also the High Elven King Gil-galad, Elrond and the blacksmith Celebrimbor, who seek a solution to Elrond’s failure to obtain the mithril in Khazad-dum, the realm of the dwarves.
Four hairy feet, on the other hand, had set out in search of the Stranger, but the mystical figures who were looking for him found him first. There, they reveal to the Stranger that it is Sauron, whom they worship.
However, hairy feet appear, starting a tense scene in which the little ones are hunted down by the powerful figures. But the Stranger, with Nori’s help, discovers that these beings don’t have the power to define who he is. So it quickly becomes clear that he is not, and never was, Sauron.
The comparison ends with Sadoc’s sacrifice, with the figures who realize that the Stranger is “the other”, an Istari – that is, a Magician -, and with the Stranger himself who says: “I’m fine!”, Before eliminating the threat from those who saw him as their master.
In Númenor, Eärien has an interaction with the king, while Míriel and Elendil, with the retinue who went to Middle-earth, return home. Míriel and Elendil also have a moment together when they decide to remain true to the cause of the old ways, namely the Númenóreans who work alongside the Elves.
Even before discovering that the Stranger is a Wizard (and not Sauron), the most attentive viewers, who are familiar with Tolkien’s work, have already understood that it was a misunderstanding. This is because we see Halbrand in conversation with Celebrimbor, offering the elven blacksmith a hint of their problems, which ultimately lead to the creation of the rings of power.
Celebrimbor’s idea of creating the rings, in the story told by JRR Tolkien, was suggested to him by a disguised figure of Sauron, and this is exactly what Halbrand reveals himself. Galadriel begins to distrust Halbrand at the beginning of the episode and the distrust of him leads to the discovery and confrontation between the elf and what he was looking for the most.
Sauron invades Galadriel’s mind and reminds the elf that it was she who encouraged him to return to Middle-earth, claiming that he had already given up, that he wanted to continue living in Númenor. This dialogue mirrors a line from Gal-galad to Elrond in Episode 1, when Galadriel’s friend wonders if her search for Sauron should continue.
“We predicted that if he continued, he would inadvertently keep alive the very evil he seeks to defeat. Because the same wind that puts out a fire can also spread it, “said the High King of the Elves. And indeed, it was Galadriel who, in a sense, caused Sauron to return.
Finally, one final revelation is implied when Nori and the Wizard, whom we know as The Stranger, begin their adventure (which would be just a journey, according to him, if he had gone alone). “When in doubt, Elanor Brandepé, always follow your nose.”
This sentence brings us to the first film in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, when Gandalf says something very similar to the hobbit Merry. So apparently “The Rings of Power” winked at the fans and said, without confirming with all words, that here is the origin of Gandalf.
In addition to the extremely well-crafted special effects, as they were during the first season, the script for “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” deserves applause for its complexity and meaning.
Performances in general don’t stand out as much, with a few exceptions such as Elrond (Robert Aramayo) and Durin (Owain Arthur), The Stranger (Daniel Weyman) and Nori (Markella Kavenagh) and Míriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson).
However, this cannot be said to be a strong point of the series. Morfydd Clark in the role of Galadriel, for example, does not stand out as much as he should and fails to fascinate the public despite his leading role.
But, with the exception of this point (quite important, which may improve in the future), “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” closes its first season nicely, unraveling some mysteries while leaving others open for the sequel.
What will happen to the rings? Where is the Celeborn elf? What will become of Númenor? Will Isildur reappear? What will Sauron’s next steps be?
The first season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is available in full on Prime Video. The series already has a confirmed second season that has already started production, but it may take a while before it returns to Middle-earth.
