What was your inspiration for writing the last episode of She-Hulk?
Jessica Gao: It wasn’t an easy task because we didn’t really know how the first season would end. I was afraid that Kevin Feige would force me to do the classic ending like in every Marvel movie or series. Rather, he encouraged me to go in a direction that seemed logical to me compared to the rest of the series, and that’s when I got the idea to dive into the metaverse and AI. Kevin really wanted this series to stand out in the Marvel Universe.
John, do you regret not fighting in Hulk mode at the end? How would you imagine this scene with the Hulking?
John Bass: No, I don’t regret it, as much as I love that ending, it’s a stroke of genius. I do not regret. Either way, he’ll find a way to ruin Jennifer’s life again. And then, that dream of becoming the Hulk will stay with me forever.
Has the occasional backlash from fans affected your writing?
Jessica Gao: No, not really, because we actually wrote everything before fans got excited on social media. This was not a problem and will not change the continuation of She-Hulk’s adventures.
How do you see these fans resisting female superheroes like your character?
John Bass: I know how to keep calm and cool. I focus on my character and our series so that this toxicity does not affect my good mood.
Do you think we’ll see She-Hulk in another Marvel movie or series? And what about season two?
Jessica Gao: I can’t tell you for sure because Kevin Feige decides what happens in the Marvel Universe. But I hope we still get the rights to a Marvel adventure with She-Hulk. The ending of this episode of the first season makes you wonder…
What will be the important message of this series for you?
John Bass: It’s a critique of the toxic fan culture that can destroy someone’s life. It should be banned, as She-Hulk says so well in this last episode. This is a real chance to be part of a series that deals with important topics. In any case, I hope the fans have a good time, because it is first and foremost great entertainment.
Jessica Gao: This is truly a series that shows the duality of personality that can reside within us. How should Jennifer Walters cope with this new dual identity and how her life changes overnight. It’s really about the journey of this young woman trying to find inner peace and accept who she has become. I hope viewers can relate to him and empathize with She-Hulk.
