The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power revealed in Friday’s Season 1 finale which character Sauron, the great antagonist of the universe created by JRR Tolkien, was hiding. Before revealing his plans for a second season, which won’t be released until 2024, here’s what Patrick McKay, co-creator of the Prime Video show, can tease:

Sauron will now be able to be Sauron. Like Tony Soprano or Walter White. He is wicked, but wickedly complex. We felt that if we did that from the first season, it would overshadow everything.

“So Season 1 is Batman Begins and The Dark Knight is the next movie.” Continued by Patrick McKay, “Sauron is out in the open. We can’t wait. Season 2 has the ‘law’ story, and the audience can be like, ‘This is the story we were hoping for in season 1!’ In season 2, we’re giving it to them.”
Based on Tony Soprano and Walter White, the creators compare Sauron’s a priori modus operandi not to the methods of a gangster, but show that they intend to make this big bad boy one of the iconic figures of the small screen. Indeed, The Sopranos and Breaking Bad stood out as legendary television series. Both Tony and Walter are recognized as evil geniuses.
For Season 1, actor Charlie Vickers, who plays Sauron, didn’t know he was playing the Unnamable! He tells her THR :

I wasn’t sure before filming the third episode. We shot the first two episodes, then the series got delayed due to COVID. At the end of this hiatus, the makers pulled me aside and announced me. I unknowingly filmed the rafting sequence as the real Halbrand.
It was said that the actor had a flea in his ear from the auditions for the role, because he was forced to read Richard III, who killed his family to ascend the throne, using all tricks. Its endings and a passage from John Milton’s Paradise Lost, in which Satan tries to lead a new attack on Heaven.
