Why didn’t Frodo and his companions ask the eagles to take them to Mount Doom to drop the One Ring there?
This big question, which many Lord of the Rings fans have been asking themselves for many years, has led to heated debates on the net, dozens of theories and even a few jokes.
Thus, in April 2021, a man named appeared on the YouTube channel Asher Pulse The most disturbing video (viewed more than 2.5 million times). For 50 seconds, you can hear a recording of Tolkien’s voice answering his fans’ famous eagle question:
“Here I have a letter written by someone who loves Lord of the Rings very much, and in his letter he asks me why the heroes did not fly with the eagles to Mordor. People came to me to see the pub. They asked me the same question: why did they not fly to Mordor like eagles? (…) I gave him the same answer that I will tell you now: shut up!
This short excerpt, supposedly taken from an interview with Tolkien, immediately raised doubts among many fans. While some were amused by the professor’s spontaneity, others were more suspicious of a montage, or even an imitation created from scratch.
It is hard to imagine Tolkien expressing himself in this way, or to imagine that the extract was not previously public. However, it remained a mystery to many, until last April, a year after the first video was released, Usher Pulse put an end to his own prank, just to clear up the last bit of confusion.
Explaining that many netizens in the comments were convinced that the recording was authentic, he confirmed that it was a simple imitation and changed his voice to imitate Tolkien. However, this second video has only been viewed 7,500 times.
Tolkien’s only known comment on eagles comes from a letter written in 1958, in which he recalled being disciplined not to take too much advantage of the scenario:
“Eagles are a dangerous ‘machine’. I have used them sparingly and that is the absolute limit of their reliability or usefulness.”
