After the death of Viserys, a new king was crowned in Westeros at House Dragon. But it is not the originally planned heir who ascends the Iron Throne. Instead of Princess Rhaenyra, Alycent Hightower and her father Otto succeeded in crowning Aegon, second in name, the first son of the Queen.
But there is more to this new king than his reprehensible behavior, who disgusts even his own mother, but is determined to make him the undisputed sovereign. Aegon is an alcoholic, depraved and dangerous character who has raped several women and enjoys witnessing undercover fights between young children.
With such a personality, Aegon brings back bad memories for fans of another hated Game of Thrones character: the infamous Joffrey Baratheon. A comparison discussed on the set of Dragon House between actor Tom Glynn-Carney and showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, as explained by Aegon’s translator HollywoodReporter :
“Ryan and Miguel said that if we were to compare him, he would be close to Joffrey. However, he is not an outright psychopath. He is much more complex. His decisions are the result of feelings of insecurity, confusion and anger. He is just bitterly confused and mentally ill.”
In Game of Thrones, Joffrey was a sadistic, power-hungry killer who enjoyed his actions. For Tom Glynn-Carne, his character Aegon is different because he doesn’t really want to be king and he’s made to understand that he shouldn’t be hoping for a place on the Iron Throne:
“Although Aegon is a nightmare who defies all manner of rules and discipline, he is quite helpless. He is so dependent on alcohol that he has become a confused and confused person. who does not yet know himself. He is unable to make important decisions. All his life he relied on those around him to make sure he did the right thing. But he makes terrible decisions, and now those decisions take on a whole new dimension.”
However, Aegon’s behavior must change after episode 9 of House of the Dragon as he embraces his new role as ruler with the support of his mother and the crown of his ancestor Aegon the Conqueror. By receiving this power, which he had previously denied, he could indulge his perversions with impunity and become even closer to the person of Joffrey Baratheon.
This should not allay the fears of Tom Glynn-Carney, who did not want his character to be completely hated by the public. Fortunately for him, he was able to rely on the advice of Kit Harington and Alfie Allen, two Game of Thrones alumni, who told him that “Remember he was only a small cog in a great machine” And above all, that it was necessary “Enjoy, laugh and play with his character”.
