‘El agua’ by Elena López Riera will be the only Spanish performance in this 54th edition.
A few days after the announcement of an Official Section dominated by the usual names of the squad of Thierry Fremauxalthough with the great incentives that are the new films of David Cronenberg, Kelly Reichardt, Hirokazu Koreeda, James Gray Y claire deniswe met today the complete program of the Directors’ Fortnightthe section dedicated to works of a more provocative and brave.
Inaugurates the ‘Scarlet’ (‘L’envol’, in its original title) competition, Pietro Marcello’s new moviewhose previous ‘Martin Eden’ dazzled critics at the 2019 Venice Film Festival (also at Manu Yanez de Fotogramas, here is his review). It is an adaptation of a neo-romantic novel by Alexander Grin which follows the emancipation of a woman from 1919 to 1939, in a time of great technological advances and dreams that would soon turn into nightmares.
Among the most notable names in the section, we highlight the return of Mia Hansen-Løve to the Croisette, where last year he premiered ‘Bergman’s Island’ in the Official Section. In 2022, the Fortnight will host ‘One Fine Morning’, with Lea Seydoux Y Melvil Poupaud among its leading cast. The film focuses the intimacy of a woman who embarks on an extramarital affair at a particularly difficult time in life… For those of you who aren’t at Cannes, Avalon will release ‘Bergman’s Island’ in theaters on June 17th.
After ‘Ex Machina’ and ‘Annihilation’, two of the biggest hits in contemporary science fiction, alex garland will bring ‘Men’ (produced by A24), a creepy story about a young woman (jessie buckley) who retires to rest in a nice house in the country after the traumatic death of her husband. Only to find a town of disturbing men, who do not intend to leave her alone until she has purged her feminine sins. Fans of ‘The Wicker Man’ and good ghost stories will be delighted.
They will join Mark Jenkins (author of the critically acclaimed ‘Bait’), today with ‘Enys Men’, and Alice Winocour (‘next’), which will present ‘Paris Memories’https://www.fotogramas.es/”Revoir Paris’, with Virginie Efira Y Benoit Magimel. Represent Spain ‘Water’debut of Elena Lopez Rivera starring Luna Pamies, just 17 years old, who is accompanied by Barbara Lennie Y medina snowlike his mother and grandmother. The movie of Elena Lopez Riverato which we have dedicated a report, deals with the life of a young woman in a town where an old popular belief survives that affirms that some women are predestined to disappear with each new flood because “they have water inside”.
Kelly Reichardt will be present in the Official Section with ‘Showing Up’, his new film with Michelle Williams, but the filmmaker will have to leave a gap in the agenda for the Fortnight: there she will receive an award of honor for her career. Reichardt has signed to this day masterpieces like ‘Wendy and Lucy’, ‘First Cow’, ‘Old Joy’ or ‘Certain Women’.
