Is Netflix’s Most Watched Movie Today Inspired by True Story?

Today is the most watched movie on Netflix, the horror “Cage” appears in first place in the Top 10 of the platform. But is the story of the film inspired by reality?

“Cage” centers on a girl whose path ends up crossing that of a couple, who find the girl in the middle of a street and take her to the hospital. There they discover that the child is traumatized and knows almost nothing about his own identity.

The Spanish film is directed by Ignacio Tatay, and goes through a path full of terrifying themes, with a gigantic realism from start to finish, mainly due to the good interpretation of the cast. All this realism can lead audiences to wonder if the film is inspired by a true story.

Is “Cage” based on a true story?

Although “Jaula” appears to be inspired by a true story, the script is original, signed by Isabel Peña and Ignacio Tatay. However, there is a known case in Europe with great similarities to the events of the film.

Several themes and plots of the film recall the case of Josef Fritzl, a man accused of keeping his own daughter, Elisabeth Fritzl, who was a prisoner in the basement of her home in the Austrian city of Amstetten for a period of 24 years. According to reports in the case, Josef abused and assaulted his daughter between 1984 and 2008.

Elisabeth had seven children, three of whom remained in the basement with their mother, and the other three were raised by Josef, who reported that the children had been abandoned by his family. One of Josef’s children died after birth, perhaps due to negligence.

Although some differences between the cases are remarkable, without going into too much detail, there are many similarities between the Spanish film “Cage” and the true story of Josef Fritzl, known in Austria as “The Monster of Amstetten”.

The movie “Cage” is available on Netflix.
