Brendan Fraser in the first teaser for Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale

A24 has released the first trailer for Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, starring Brendan Fraser. The film was first screened in September at the 79th Venice Film Festival and received a warm welcome. During the 6-minute standing ovation, Frazier couldn’t hold back his tears.

The plot of the drama by Darren Aronofsky, written by Samuel D. Hunter, based on his play of the same name, tells about Charlie (Brendan Fraser) – a middle-aged man who is trying to reconnect with his 17-year-old daughter. During her childhood, he left the family for a lover who later died. Experiencing grief, pain and guilt, Charlie began to overeat, reaching a weight of 600 pounds – about 272 kilograms.

According to the actor, this is a completely new role for him in every sense:

It’s certainly far from anything I’ve ever done, but I won’t be modest… I know it will make a lasting impression.

The main roles in the film, in addition to Fraser, were performed by Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Samantha Morton and Ty Simpkins. The film will be released worldwide on December 9th.

This is Frazier’s first big role in almost 10 years since the release of his 2013 action movie Breakthrough. At the same time, only scandals haunted the actor in recent years: in 2018, Fraser claimed that he was sexually assaulted by Philip Burke, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, at a dinner in the summer of 2003, when Burke grabbed his buttock and touched his crotch. This incident, the divorce from his wife and the death of his mother led to Fraser’s depression, which, combined with health problems (including weight gain) and the negative public reaction after Burke’s accusation, in his opinion, led to a career failure.
