Many of the actors in “The Crown” look very different without their characterization, making it difficult to recognize them in other films or series.
This is the case of the actors who were responsible for bringing Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh to life in the Netflix series, and who share a strange relationship.

Prince Philip’s ‘The Crown’ cast members were on ‘Game of Thrones’
In addition to Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, in the Netflix series, the three actors can also say that they appeared in another series about the intrigue and drama surrounding a throne, in this case the world of Westeros.
The first to portray the life of Philip of Edinburgh in the series was Matt Smith, who arrived after starring as the Eleventh Doctor in several seasons of “Dr. Quinn.
Matt Smith’s version showed the beginning of his marriage to Queen Elizabeth II, but for the third season there was a character change and Smith moved on to other projects.
Among his upcoming projects is the 2022 “Game of Thrones” prequel series, “House of the Dragon,” in which he plays Prince Daemon Targaryen, husband of the Black Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen.
The second actor to take on Matt Smith’s role as Prince Philip was Tobias Menzies, known for his work in ‘Casino Royale’ and ‘Underworld: Blood Wars’.
Tobias Menzies also has a history of producing the fictional world created by George RR Martin, having played Edmure Tully, Catelyn Stark’s brother and Lord of Riverrun, in Game of Thrones.
During seasons 3 and 4 Tobias Menzies became a fan favorite with his role as Philip of Edinburgh, but for the last two seasons of ‘The Crown’ the role was left to another actor.
Now for season 5 of ‘The Crown’, Jonathan Pryce, famous for his role as Pope Francis in ‘The Two Popes’, has been cast to play the elderly Prince Philip.
But Jonathan Pryce also appeared in “Game of Thrones” in seasons 5 and 6 as the character known as the High Sparrow, who was the leader of the Faith of the Seven and had great influence on the Iron Throne.
In this way, all the actors who have played Prince Philip have also been in the “Game of Thrones” universe. Season 5 of “The Crown” is now available on Netflix, with Season 6 yet to have a release date.
