‘La Ruta’: The Valencian ‘movida’ that nobody has talked about

The ATRESplayer PREMIUM series about the revolution that started in Valencia at the beginning of the 80s is one of the essential titles of the year.

Everyone has heard of the famous Bakalao Route in Valencia. Discotheques like Puzzle or Chocolate sound familiar to everyone. However, very few know the true phenomenon and what a movement meant on a cultural level that, contrary to what is thought, was born in the early 80s. And that is the part that tries to tell ‘The route’a new ATRESplayer PREMIUM series that has just premiered on the platform and has already become one of the best series of 2022.

The fiction, directed by Borja Soler (creator together with Roberto Martín Maiztegui), Belén Funes and Carlos Marqués-Marcet, tells the story of five friends from Sueca, Valencia, from their farewell on Ruta Destroy in 1993 until the first time they entered in Barraca, in 1981. A journey in the opposite direction, from darkness to light, which has been a great challenge for the five leading actors: Àlex Monner, Claudia Salas, Ricardo Gómez, Elisabet Casanovas and Guillem Barbosa.

“It was very fun to work like this, to see how the character’s look changes with the people around him”, explains Àlex. His partner Ricardo adds that “it was extremely complicated”, and wants to highlight the work of the script team, headed by Roberto Martín Maiztegui, Clara Botas, Silvia Herreros de Tejada and Borja Soler.

The interpreters acknowledge that they did not know much more about the famous bakalao route than what was revealed at the time. Before starting to shoot, they immersed themselves in field work and met several ‘routers’, including the famous DJ Fran Lenaers. “I found it to be a much more genuine move than what had come my way. It covered disciplines such as music, dance, design… That’s why this series is going to clean up the image that has come down to us a lot”explains Claudia.

With a cast that completes Sonia Almarcha, Luis Bermejo, Victoria Oliver, Josep Manel Casany, Rosana Espinós and Nao Albert, ‘La ruta’ has been recorded in natural settings in Valencia and even in some of the original discotheques, which are still open today, such as Spook or Barraca, which were modified to achieve an appearance more similar to the time in which the action. Others, such as Puzzle, Spiral, NOD, ACTV or Chocolate, have been recreated.

The creators of the series have also confirmed that they are working on a second season that will take place in Ibiza.
