The Golden Globes ceremony will be broadcast again in 2023, after being interrupted in 2022. However, actor Brendan Fraser, one of the big names of this awards cycle, will not be present for the gala where the awards from Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).
In 2021, the Los Angeles Times sued the HFPA, showing that the association did not count black journalists among its 87 members, which led to several other allegations. As Golden Globes return to TV next year, under a one-year deal with NBC, Best Actor nominee for “The Whale” Brendan Fraser has already confirmed his absence from the awards leading up to the Oscars.
“I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I respect the Hollywood Foreign Press Association,” Fraser said in a magazine cover story. Quality check🇧🇷 “No, I’m not attending,” she said of a possible trip to the Golden Globes ceremony.
Fraser added: “It’s because of the history I have with them. And my mother didn’t raise a hypocrite. You can call me in many things, but not like that.
The actor’s frank speech, as well as his strong words regarding the HFPA are not in vain. In 2018, Fraser accused former president and HFPA member Philip Berk of groping and assaulting the actor at a luncheon in 2003. Fraser revealed he was “still scared” of the repercussions of coming forward and prosecuting.
At the time of publication, the HFPA proposed that Fraser sign a joint statement stating that “although it has been concluded that Mr. Berk inappropriately touched Mr. Fraser, the evidence supports that this was intended to be construed as a joke rather than than as a sexual advance.
Fraser refused to sign the joint statement, and Berk faced no disciplinary action, remaining a voting member of the HFPA until he was fired from the organization in April 2021 for other reasons.
“I knew they would kick [isso para frente]🇧🇷 I knew they would fast forward the story. I knew I certainly had no future with that system as it was… I think it was because it was too prickly or sharp or vulgar for people to want to go first and get emotionally invested in the situation,” Fraser said of doing the accuse.
As for the HFPA’s signaled reforms to its members and voting practices, Fraser said “at the moment, no,” he doesn’t believe any progress is being made. “Maybe time will tell if they will… I don’t know what they will do. I don’t know,” she continued.
Had the HFPA reached out after Fraser’s allegations in the #MeToo movement, “per the rules of engagement, it would have been my responsibility to take a look and make a decision at that moment if that was the situation,” Fraser said. “And it should be, I don’t know, what’s the word I’m looking for… sincere? I would like some gesture to make medicine with poison somehow. I don’t know what it is. But that would be my hope. But it’s not about me.
