Director Quentin Tarantino shared some thoughts on Hollywood, including what he considers cinema’s worst era and his favorite film within his oeuvre.
In an interview with The Howard Stern Show (via Variety), Tarantino admitted that while he doesn’t usually pick one of his films as the best in past interviews, he does have a favorite.
“For years people were asking me things like [qual é o meu melhor filme]🇧🇷 I was like, ‘Oh, they’re all my kids,'” said the director, before admitting, “I really think ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ is my best movie.”
“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” stars Leonardo DiCaprio as failed actor Rick Dalton and Brad Pitt as stuntman Cliff Booth. The film was something of a love letter to the last days of Hollywood’s so-called Golden Age in the late 1960s.
Although Tarantino claims that “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”, released in 2019, is his best work to date, he ironically points to the current moment of cinema as one of the worst in Hollywood history.
“I think 80s cinema is, along with the 50s, the worst era in Hollywood history,” Tarantino commented on The Video Archives podcast. “Only matched for now, only matched for the present age!”
While many consider the ’80s to be filled with classics, it’s clear that Tarantino doesn’t think so. He had previously filmed “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” (1989), telling the ReelBlend podcast that he liked the controversial “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” (2008) more than the “boring” third film, starring Sean Connery as Harrison Ford’s archaeologist father.
Quentin Tarantino began his career as a director in the late 1980s, but it was in the 1990s that he emerged as one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed filmmakers, with hits like Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. Already in the 2000s he directed some hits such as “Kill Bill” (2003 and 2004), “Inglourious Basterds” (2009), “Django Unchained” (2012), and his most recent (and favorite) film “There Was once upon a time in Hollywood” (2019).
