SELF-ANALYSIS: Gol SUV was an absurd idea that didn’t succeed

For nearly two years there was talk with great fanfare that the Gol would survive as an SUV, but that was a preposterous idea that was never going to pan out.

SELF-ANALYSIS: Gol SUV was an absurd idea that didn’t succeed

For two years everyone has been reading somewhere that a Gol SUV will replace the current Volkswagen Gol. Since the unveiling of the Polo Track, though, I’ve already thought of this car as the real replacement for the Gol. I have come to imagine that the Polo Track name was just a hoax to deceive the media and the competition.

But the publications’ insistence on a Gol SUV was so great that I even wrote an article or two about it. Only it wasn’t. The cooler analysis made it clear that Gol would indeed retire for several reasons. Let’s look at some.

1. The name Gol is an aged name. Only people who bought cars in the 80s and 90s remember the mystique of the Volkswagen Gol as a “big car”. But Volks wants a new, young and connected audience, which is why Gol has become synonymous with backwardness.

2. The same name is not kept in a public changing car. A car to be completely modified is common in the history of the automotive industry. But good business practices teach that you don’t keep the name of an old product if the new product seeks a new audience.

3. Keeping the Gol name for the Polo Track also made sense, given that the audience is the same: anyone looking for a practical and sturdy entrance hatch. But naming a compact SUV Gol made no sense at all, as the audience for an entry-level SUV isn’t the same as an entry-level sedan.

4. In the same way that a Gol SUV was an absurd idea, the return of the Gol GTI, which was even commented on, also made no sense. The GTI brand has gained worldwide prominence at Volkswagen and has global rules to use. Therefore, investing in creating an expensive sports car to sell poorly in a late-career model was really just a summer night’s dream.

5. The Polo Track name is still unappealing to the Brazilian consumer, but it is in line with what Volkswagen has in Europe and serves as a stepping stone for entry into the new Polo, which has become a more sophisticated sedan.
