We’re still alive for another day, says Morocco coach

Morocco’s goal on Wednesday was to avoid defeat by Croatia in their World Cup opener in Qatar, and the 0-0 draw was a satisfactory result, said coach Walid Regragui.

“Our aim was to live another day, as defeat in the first match ends their hopes in the competition,” Regragui said at a press conference following the clash.

The draw with the 2018 runners-up world champion leaves Morocco still waiting to qualify for the next stage before meetings against Belgium on Sunday and Canada next Thursday in group F of the tournament.

“We did our best, the goal was not to lose. I’ve only been here for two months and I’m proud of the players. We wanted to get another result, but in the end we were satisfied with the draw.” said Regragui, who took charge of Morocco in September following coach Vahid Halilhodzic’s sacking.

“We will wait for the result of the match against Belgium and then try to qualify for the round of 16 against Canada,” he said.

Regragui, who led Wydad to the African Champions League last May, indicated that his team played like a European team.

“We played with balance like the European teams, we wanted to pose a threat to Croatia and get a good result, but the main objective was not to lose,” he said. “We need to improve and develop a winning mentality.”
