E-cigarettes may increase tooth decay, according to one study

Researchers believe that e-cigarettes may contribute to a high risk of tooth decay due to the liquid’s sugar content and viscosity.

It is not news that the scientific community highlights the negative points of adherence to the use of vaping (or electronic cigarettes), but a recent study published in the journal The Journal of the American Dental Association pointed out that the practice can increase the risk of tooth decay.

According to researchers at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, the extent of the effects on oral health, especially tooth decay, is still relatively unknown, which requires further study. The idea, for now, is just to raise public awareness of the risks.

To arrive at the discovery, the team analyzed data from more than 13,000 patients at dental clinics. About 79% of patients who vape were classified as being at high risk for tooth decay, compared to only about 60% of other patients.

“It’s important to understand that this is preliminary data. It’s not 100% conclusive, but people need to be aware of what we’re seeing,” the study authors stress.

But what justifies this relationship? One of the authors’ theories is that e-cigarettes may contribute to a high risk of tooth decay due to the sugar content and viscosity of the essences which, when aerosolized and inhaled through the mouth, adhere to the teeth.

Previously, a study showed that aerosol vaporization alters the oral microbiome, making it more hospitable to bacteria that cause tooth decay. Vaping has also been observed to appear to encourage tooth decay in areas where it doesn’t usually occur, such as the lower edges of the upper incisors (front teeth).
