Elected player of the match against Saudi Arabia, the striker gets excited after scoring Poland’s winning goal
Robert Lewandowski lived this Saturday the most important day of his career a world Cup🇧🇷 in the victory of Poland as for the Saudi Arabiathe Barcelona striker scored his first World Cup goal, was named man of the match and helped bring his side one step closer to qualifying for the round of 16, something they hadn’t seen since 1986.
At the post-match press conference, Lewandowski said he had fulfilled his childhood dreams when he scored his first goal. At the celebration, the striker was moved up alongside his teammates. “The older I get, the more I get excited (with the objective)“, joked the player. Lewandowski is the greatest scorer in the history of Poland, but he had never scored in a World Cup.
“Hard to say why (to cry) it happened. After the goal was scored, everything was released. Childhood emotions and dreams came true,” he said. “I was pleased with my assistance (at 39 minutes, for the goal of Zielinski)but they are not so important for the forwards”. He still had two more chances to increase the scoreboard, and in one he hit the post.
Lewandowski plays his second – and perhaps last – World Cup in Qatar with the Polish national team. In 2018, in Russia, they went blank and were eliminated in the group stage: in that edition Poland were seeded number 1 in group H. “I realize that the good of the Polish national team is the most important thing . I like to say that one day I not only went to two World Cups, but also left my marks here. That goal was my dream,” he said.
With four points and leader of Group C, Poland face Argentina for the final round of the group stage. A win guarantees selection in the round of 16. After this Saturday’s match, Lewandowski preaches respect for his opponent. “We know we still have one match ahead of us, which will be decisive. The most important thing for us now is that we are still alive, we are still fighting,” he underlined.
Poland coach Czeslaw Michniewicz followed a similar line of thinking to his player. In an interview with TVP Sport after the match, he stated that Poland’s situation at the World Cup is not resolved. “Four points don’t solve anything, but I’m happy we scored two goals and had good chances to increase the score.” Michniewicz took charge of the national team after Paulo Sousa decided to take charge of Flamengo earlier this year.
Poland will face Argentina next Wednesday, at 16:00 (Brasilia time). At the same time, Saudi Arabia and Mexico are dueling for the other place in Group C.
