The government has declared a state of emergency on the island of Ischia
The death toll from the landslide that hit the town of Casamicciola Terme on the Italian island of Ischia rose to at least seven last Saturday (26).
After having found and rescued the body of the first victim a few hours after the disaster, the rescue team located seven bodies (27) this Sunday, five of which had already been extracted from the mud, including those of a newborn less than a month old and a little girl about five or six years old.
Sniffer dogs have also identified what could be the eighth victim, but firefighters have yet to reach the alleged body. So far the only dead person whose name has been made official is shop assistant Eleonora Sirabella, 31, whose partner is among the missing.
The number of individuals whose whereabouts are unknown is currently uncertain, as some bodies already recovered have not yet been identified.
During this Sunday morning, the Italian government declared a state of emergency in Ischia for one year and allocated 2 million euros for the first interventions on the island.
“Other transfers will be made as soon as we have knowledge of the damage and the immediate requests,” said Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci. In the coming days, a visit to Ischia by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is scheduled.
At the Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis also lamented the tragedy and expressed solidarity “with the people of Ischia”.
“I pray for the victims, for those who are suffering and for all who have stepped in to help,” he said.
A report published just over a week ago by the NGO Legambiente shows that the number of extreme weather events in Italy between January and October increased by 27% compared to the same period last year due to global warming.
After a meeting on Sunday, the Italian government promised to approve a “national climate change adaptation plan” by the end of 2022. 🇧🇷
