Gakpo flattered by transfer speculation but wants to focus on Qatar

Dutch forward Cody Gakpo has emerged as one of the best strikers in the World Cup and said he was flattered by speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League but said he needed to focus on the tournament in Qatar first.

Gakpo has scored in both of the Netherlands’ World Cup matches so far, with his left foot against Ecuador on Friday one of the finest goals of the tournament.

“My goal is the World Cup, but it’s always nice to hear stories like this,” Gakpo said at a press conference on Sunday when asked about a possible departure from PSV Eindhoven.

He had been the subject of transfer speculation even before the season, but the anticipated deals failed to materialize and he has since helped his club enter the knockout stages of the Europa League.

“I’m trying not to think too much about it. I try to do my best…to help the team,” he said.

“The coach (Louis van Gaal) is very demanding. He always tries to push me to become a better player. I am very grateful to him. I am not surprised by my performance. I know what I am capable of,” he added.

“At the moment I’m a PSV player and the focus is on the national team. We’ll see what happens. Anything can happen in football, but as it is now, I will still play for PSV after the World Cup.”

After a disappointing 1-1 draw with Ecuador, the Dutch won’t underestimate the hosts who were eliminated in their final group match on Tuesday, said team-mate Daley Blind.

“There were many things that could have been done better. It wasn’t our best game. We have to do much better to get better results,” he said.
